“Perhaps ritual is everything we do to hold meaning in place, (including community meaning) while we continue our collective dialog with spirit. Contemporary rituals by women include private home altars, family and group rites of passage, and mass rituals designed to connect us to world events. Because rituals are re-forming in women's hands, we thought to put them with the category of healing. What then is healing? Does healing require sickness? Is sickness a descent into disintegration followed by recovery to a healed state? Or are we already wholeness that must do battle with attack by evil forces we call illness?

Or, is healing a life-journey of ongoing processes, interactions within the body and its emotions, traumas, memories, habits, beliefs, energies, confrontations, re-shapings. Is sickness an opportunity to disintegrate and re-create into a renewed state, a dance between ecstasy and despair, stability and the snake of change, what used to be called The Great Round?
